Greed: The End of Duralthob by kruggsmash Greed: The End of Duralthob by kruggsmash
A Dwarf fortress story/picture I made with much inspiration from SimonSwerwer's "Reclaiming Sethilir" simonswerwer.deviantart.com/ar… . Not directly related to any PARTICULAR story in my fortresses more like a dozen mini stories from different games and other things that could happen or that I've heard of happening in DF. Enjoy!

Amazing dorfy story. :-) Have you ever thought of using magma cannons in defending your fortress?

y'no I haven't? I've read about them a while ago but their usage seemed fairly dubious at best and the set-up seemed fairly involved. Do they work well? If so then thats the next thing on MY agenda for sure!

Only tried them once on my volcano embark, made specifically to try it out, so getting lava was pretty damn easy. But I'll have you know that it was damn effective. I had 2x1x2 tank of lava with floodgate at the bottom facing outward from my gates linked to a lever in dining hall. It dispatched around fifteen useless peasant migrants (I didn't have patience to wait for sieges) and around the same number of pastured animals (forgot to move the pasture) rather quickly. And amusingly. :P Only problem is that you have to wait a fair bit till the lava cools down. But that's why I made the tank such a small thing. Imagine a huge shotgun blast, or maybe more accurate description might be, throwing contents of few buckets of water at someone, at once, but with lava. Not like unleashing a river of bloody magma. That's a bit overkill.

Anyway, I have plans for another volcano embark, with two 1x1x3 turrets of magma-goodness at the gates and also at caverns entrance, just for good measure. I do not say that magma cannons are the way to go, but I indeed do think that it is rather amusing use of magma and also a great way to improve your defences (and fun chances!) at lava-rich embarks/fortresses.

Definitely try it out. But I suggest more smaller tanks/magma cannons rather than one large tank. More managable and easier to clean up the mess, as liquids in DF only dry when at 1/7 level and lava is pretty thick and spreads slower, you just do not want 3/7 pool half a year in front of yer fortress, y'know? Or you could blast one turret for one wave of attackers and second for other. Anyway, let me know when you try it out!

could have a second entrance that opens up while you're under attack. block up the main entrance till its over. muahahaha! Yeah, gonna have to make this happen

Sounds pretty useful! Also, maybe connect the magma-cannons to pressure plates maybe. Magmablast traps! Sounds pretty cardgamish, somewhat. Anyway, let me/us know how it turned out. :P

I made an account specifically for the purpose of letting you know that this is truly amazing. The interlinking levels are so cool!

I'm inspired to recreate the flooding chamber, filled with beautiful engravings of Cheese and/or Brown Recluse Spiders so the gobbos have something to look at as they die

It means a lot! Thanks much! I WOULD definitely recommend the water chamber. It is useful to have a river-fed chamber above the flooding chamber that will overflow and feed a well farther down.
